Sylvia has been working as a craftsman and designer, and in the leather industry since 1971. She has designed and produced a wide spectrum of items including handmade sandals, personal leather goods (wallets), accessories (belts), handbags, luggage, fine leather clothing, motor sport leathers and sculpture. She is presently challenging her skills by learning to build custom fitted western (cowboy) boots.
Sylvia is presently works at her studio in Petersham, MA. In 1990 she and her husband bought
the Twin Dairy Farm (on route 101) and re configured the dairy
barn into office, shop, showroom and studio space. "Coming from
a one bedroom apartment in the west fens of Boston and having
all this work space is as if I died and went to heaven. In 1996
we bought our first llamas and we nicknamed them ball and
chain... No more running around the world with our bicycles
in high gear and camping out in the woods. Through a lot of enthusiasm and hard work our herd has quickly grown to 23."
Sylvia studied music and dance at the Walnut Hill School of Performing Arts in Natick MA, and at Simon's Rock College in Gt. Barrington MA, with postgraduate studies at The Berklee College of Jazz, Boston University School of Fine Arts and The New England Conservatory of Music. She plays renaissance and baroque flute.
She is a founding member of the Cambridge
Artists' Cooperative, an award winning gallery of fine crafts representing
250 (plus or minus) American craft artists located in Harvard Square,
Cambridge.
